cfdisk is definitely confused by an unpartitioned drive because it
tries to read the partition table BEFORE doing anything else. If you
start it with the '-z' option, cfdisk will assume a zero partition

That might work on the drives that were never partitioned, but I also have one mystery drive which is currently working fine with BL2 and BL3, and also says I have a bad signature on partition table. I tried cfdisk -z on this and got some messages which I posted a while back. I will try again on the more recent, unpartitioned, drives. Thanks.
caveat: I know nothing about scsi drives but i assume this applies.
Once you load the drivers they seem to act the same (sda1 vs hda1).

A lot of web research revealed that cfdisk cannot handle a drive that
has not already been partitioned to start with. Maybe someone used
the scsi utility to low-level format the drive.
