I have successfully transfered files from a DOS machine to
a Linux machine using PLIP (but it was very complicated and
somewhat unreliable). Going from XP to Linux via PLIP is
probably worse.

The simplest method of parallel transfer is DOS to DOS
(using interlnk/intersvr). It can be done from a DOS
floppy, but it only can access DOS filesystems.

Linux to Linux (using PLIP and TCP/IP) works very well
(when there are no hardware issues). It can access Linux,
DOS and Windows filesystems.

At this stage I would recommend you use the easiest method.
Create a small (bootable) DOS partition on your laptop.
40mb should be enough. You will boot Linux from there using
loadlin.exe. Put the following line in C:\config.sys
--------------------------------
device=c:\dos\interlnk.exe /auto
--------------------------------
Make sure that interlnk.exe is in your c:\dos directory

On the Windows computer, exit to DOS (or use a DOS boot floppy)
and execute intersvr. On the DOS/Linux computer, reboot. It
should automatcally detect intersvr running at the othe end
of the cable and give you access to the files. Later you can
boot Linux and transfer the new files from the DOS partition
to the Linux partition.

Cheers,
Steven
