Looking very closely, I can see that the CT4170(Creative) and 4180 (Vibra), both without speaker out but with line/speaker jumper, and the AWE64 CT4520 have 1 or 2 (larger for the AWE64) square black things that at first glance resemble ICs but have only two connectors on only one side (on the AWE64 you can see a third connector between the black square and something under it which must be a tiny heat sink). The older cards (CT and Crystal) have much larger transistors, and the heat sinks are fastened down with screws.
Transistors have 3 legs connecting them to the circuit.
So the better cards have one transistor each for L and R, and the cheaper Vibras have only one really tiny transistor for both?
The CT 4170 but not the Vibra16C 4180 has a clock chip - why?

A transistor? Transistors (especially the low-power type used on
sound cards) may be hidden on silicon chips. Radioshack sells several
amplifying chips, for instance, the LM386.
