I have playmidi to the point where (using a sound-compatible
kernel) I can load sound modules and type playmidi jazz.mid and get
no error messages, but I also get no sound.

You have turned the volume up for FM synthesis, I assume? The
volume control for FM synthesis is not the same as is used for
MPlayer, or even Timidity.

I don't have a volume control. I have not needed any for 'play' or 'mplayer' or 'mpg123'. These are unpowered speakers and a powered sound card. You mentioned something before - aumix? Which package?

I recompiled and left in all the awe32 stuff. If I type
playmidi -f (for FM synthesis) it cannot find a playback device.

playmidi -f is not for Vibra16s. It is merely for older Sound
Blaster cards. playmidi -4 is what you want.

I just tried it with the downloaded version (in BL2) and was told No playback device found. But I get the same thing in BL2 without the -4 (in the earlier rpm version that I found precompiled) and will have to try in BL3 later this morning (after midnight here).

I just chrooted there. WIthout the -4 it gives me no message (just a blinking cursor). WIth the -4 'No playback device found'.

So I may have it working (the one I compiled for libc5) but no volume.

I got the same results with or without opl3.o
