I was thinking about doing this at one time, too, and Steven recommended
against it. Presuming his thinking on that remains the same, may I
recommend you look at Freesco? It's what I use here for a
router/firewall/ftp server. It runs well on old hardware and low RAM. It's
based on the 2.0.39 kernel and does good firewalling "out of the box." It
can even run from a floppy disk.
