Is there some way, after booting, to make a third RAMdisk and install extra programs to it, by mounting the ramdisk on /usr/local/bin on a computer with lots of RAM? Or at least run things from floppy disk if they fit on floppy disk? Kermit is 2MB, kermit.gz about 700K - is there some way to run a zipped binary without first copying to ramdisk? Could I put upx'ed kermit on a floppy disk and run it if I had lots of RAM?
I took along my microBL3 when visiting people this weekend (rather than the laptop 486 with external keyboard, which did not pack well) and discovered that I should have taken a modem and phone cord as well, and modem cable. Are there computers being sold now that don't have serial ports? If so, can you plug a modem cable into a USB port via some adaptor or do the adaptors just go from USB cable to serial port?
I was stuck telnetting to read my mail, with Windows. These two computers did not even have winmodems, just some box with flashing lights that was probably cable or DSL. Would it be feasible to set up a 2-floppy BL3 that could handle cable and DSL, or are the drivers for each model different? Are both types of box called a router?
Are there new computers without floppy drives? One given to a friend appears to have two dead floppy drives and we spent 6 hours on the phone trying to help her install WinXP upgrade on top of a WinNT for which she was given the wrong password, her boot floppy disk had died, we had to walk her through making a new one, and then she could not boot from floppy disk. Apparently the previous owner never used the disk drives. A BL3 boot CD image was mentioned by some list member - where do we find it now?
I would need to hunt up the instructions for how to make a boot CD - is anyone willing to put together a FAQ and post the boot CD image?
A boot CD image with drivers for cable modem and DSL would cover a lot of bases and be more bike-friendly than a laptop computer with external modem. But perhaps that is asking too much of BL - does DamnSmallLinux support broadband?
