In order for the ping to succeed, eth0 must be up on both
machines, they must have different addresses, they must
have a route to each other and the cable between them must
be good.

Nothing wrong with that machine. eth0 is up at 192.168.1.1 and
it has a route to 192.168.1.x (basicnet). As long as your other
machine has an address in the 192.168.1.x range, it can be reached.
