That's very strange. I've installed the shadow package
several times on BL2 without this happening. Did you use
installpkg to install it? What command did you use to
set the password?

Do the following to determine the actual path for root:
----------
echo $PATH
----------

cat is in /bin and id is in /usr/bin

> and in /etc//rc.d/rc.M too.

/etc/login.defs also sets path (and that file is overwritten
by the shadow package).
