About color in, I presume, text mode, would it be possible to use
assembly rather than ncurses?
DOS has the INT 10, 'CHAR/ATTR' routines to very reliably put color text
on the screen, which appear to me to use the very same routines built
into the CMOS boot/configuration menus in virtually all VGA video ROM
BIOS. If you can call that from Linux, which you can from dos, then you
can be sure to have consistent results across all distros.
