Yes, vga16. The card in this machine is Trident TVGA 9000i, 512KB. There
is a Trident xserver (for the 8900 and 9000 cards), as I recall, but I
could not get it working with this card. I therefore resorted to the
vga16 xserver.

One of my big hangups with BL1 was that I could find no chat client for
it. In terms of system resources, naim runs fine on a machine of this
class. But I understood from a comment you made earlier that naim could
not be expected to compile/install on BL1, correct? Here is the ldd
output for naim, if that will help in determining this:

ldd /usr/local/bin/naim
libncurses.so.5 => /lib/libncurses.so.5 (0x40023000)
libm.so.6 => /lib/libm.so.6 (0x40061000)
libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x40082000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6 (0x40085000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 => /lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x40000000)
