Babel: The Akkadian Bab-ilu means "gate of God". a loan translation from an
earlier Sumerian term, Ka-dingir. Trilateral root of bAb (gate or door)+ Il
, The Semitic diety In the Canaanite religion, El or Il was the supreme
god, the father of humankind and all creatures and the husband of the goddess
Asherah as recorded in the clay tablets of Ugarit. BAb has medial alif.
-------------------------------------
Ba`l : a trilateral root with a medial letter `ayn. NO relation to bAb. Ba`l
has several meanings and derivatives in various Semitic languages besides
Hebrew, ( i.e. Ugaritic, Arabic, etc.)
These are the following:
1) The name of many deities of the Semitic peoples. 2) He became a husband,
a lord over him, A lord, a master, an owner, or a possessor. A chief, a
ruler, a person of authority. 3) He became fixed in his place like as do
palm trees not knowing what to do, hence he became confounded and perplexed.
( no relation to Babel). 4) The playing and toying together of a man with
his wife, he lay with her. 5) A weight or a burden, A tax or impost that is
given for watering of palm trees. 6) Lacking strength or power, 7) does not
dress well. 8) Palm trees watered by rain, and finally 9) elevated land.

I am not convinced that the first B in BBL(×××) is not a prefix added to
××. thus it would be "In Anxiety" or in Confusion and ××¢× might mean in
elevating (self,or what should not be) is confusion.

What is Bel? It is related (in Hebrew everything is interrelated) to the
××× ×¢×¥ BUL EC, 'block of wood', (not that the BAAL is made of a block of
wood) of Is. 44:19. As to BABEL, as I have said before, a name need not be a
word, and its parsing may be open to more than one interpretation. It is
possibly related to TEL ABIYB of Ez. 3:15. The partition BABELºB-EL, with BAB
(recall the BAB-AT AYIN of Zec. 2:12) rendered 'door', so as to make BAB-EL =
'god's door', is cute.

In what sense is BAAL ( the Greek Appolo?) a "deity"? Is he "the master of
the universe"? Isaac Fried, Boston University On Aug 7, 2012, at 3:06 PM, Nir
