Hi Ed,
The tetragramaton - YHWH - is a combination (intersection) of three words:
'haya' (was), 'hoveh' (is, or present) and 'yihiyeh' (will be).
That's why god is referred to as the eternal. This is also invoked in
the famous poem Adon Olam.
