Thanks for the link.
The third post (Yigal Levin), last paragraph, in that
2004 thread, summarizes the literacy situtation in antiquity, best, imho.
indeed, the massive written talmud, the primary source of judaism, arose as
a response to the risk of loss of the oral law.
