Dave, you're confusing the nikkud for the actual text.
Remember that it is the consonantal text that "counts" - the nikkid is
just a reading aid.
God's name is YHWH, with no nikkud.
The Mesoretes,
following the tradition that they had received about which substitute
name should be used where,
added the various vocalizations in order to help the reader know how to
read.

In Jewish tradition the "correct" reading is passed down, so that no
reader who
is part of a community had to do much guessing.

Yigal,

Are you saying that the Masoretes examined the oral tradition,
as to how the Jewish people pronounced each occurrence of YHWH,
in the consonantal text, at a particular moment in time.
AND
then they pointed every occurrence of YHWH in the Masoretic text that
they were creating,
in a way that indicated to the Jewish reader,
that they were to read each occurrence of YHWH in the Masoretic Test,
just as the above mentioned "Oral Tradition" indicated tthat
the Jewish people had read each occurance of YHWH in the consonantal
text?

Dave Donnelly

P.S. Also would it true
that although there are 8 pointed variants of YHWH in the Leningrad
Codex ,
and these 8 different variants are pointed in 8 different ways,
these 8 different variants can only be pronounced in two different ways:
Adonai or Elohim?
