Hi Ron,
It can also be translated 'dry land' here, without meaning a division of the
land itself. For instance, Hippolytus devoted the second section of his
Chronicon to the apportioning of the earth among the sons of Noah. The title
of that section is, appropriately, the Diamerismos tes ges, the 'division of
the earth.' The context here, as well as the historical interpretation of
the verse, indicates that the idea is that in the days of Peleg the earth was
divided (in the sense of an inheritance) among the descendants of those who
had survived the flood.
