I strongly the following two ways, depending on your special interests. There is one look back (A), and one look forward (B).

If the goal ultimately is to better understand the Hebrew Bible, after having learned 'proper' Biblical Hebrew, there is

A. The look back:

1. Biblical Aramaic (because it's in the Bible itself)
2. Imperial Aramaic (grammar & epigraphy)
3. Phoenician (grammar & epigraphy)
4. Ugaritic
5. the Transjordan languages ("Truemmmersprachen"): Moabite, Ammonite, dialect of Deir Alla, and so on, & epigraphy)
6. Akkadian

B. The look forward:

1. Biblical Aramaic (because it's in the Bible itself)
2. Imperial Aramaic
3. Palmyrene, Nabataean …
4. the Transjordan's (see above)
5. Syriac
6. Arabian

Reinhard
