Jim,

It is possible that GALIL is indeed a KALIL, a geographical inclusion of some sort, but it is also possible that it is so named for its hilly terrain of GALIM GLULIM. This GAL seems to appear also in the names GOLAN, GILBO(A, GILGAL, GILOH, [the personal names GALYAT and the hefty (EGLON of Judges 3:17?] and GIL(AD.

Etymology of “Galilee”

A. “Galilee” in Hebrew is gimel-lamed-yod-lamed. There obviously are three
key consonants in “Galilee”, which are gimel-lamed-lamed/G-L-L.

B. The accepted etymology of the word “Galilee” is that it means “district,
circuit or region”. Isaiah 9: 1 (alternatively referenced as Isaiah 8: 23)
is cited in support of that proposition.
