Ok, this just might be my last wacko grammar question.
For the Pe Guttural verbs I have two versions listed.
For example:
Qal Imperfect 3MS: YA(:AMOD
Qal Imperfect 3MS: YEX:EZAQ
So why are there two?
Or better asked: What is the criteria for choosing one over the other?
John,
1. Type YA(:AMOD ------- typical of verbs having ayin as their first root letter. The name "YA(:AQOB" --Jacob- is a another case: look at the basic verb in Hos 12:4: this is a verbal form that became a person's name.
2. Type YEX:EZAQ ----- typical of verbs having aleph or xet as their first root letter. Look at Psa 2:12; Pr 3:12 and Am 5:15.
But.... this is not the whole truth.
a. Sometimes verbs that have aleph for their first root consonant match another vowel pattern. Look at Jr 51:52; 2Ki 5:3 or Ps 10:9. And even a third vowel pattern: look at Hos 4:15.
b. Sometimes verbs that have xet for their first root consonant match another vowel pattern. Look at Rt 3:13 or at Jb 13:9.
If you are deeply interested in these issues it would be good you contact me privately because, I fear, these issues may be of little interest for most of listers. (Excuse me, listers, if I'm wrong as regards this last point)
