dear rochelle,

did a quick search of the library catalogue. did you mean chapters from
"absent voices" (2004)...? if so, i'll look at it...

i said nothing about gregorian chant. i quoted an author who discussed
gregorian chant in the context of making a distinction relevant for my
paper. period.

i am interested in the masoretic reading of the text from a generative
phonological point of view. if you do not share that interest, oh well.

the point is simple: the phonological phrase regulates the phonology, and
also the chant. i look at poetry, and see that it might be relevant for
the metre. i don't need to consult church fathers, i can consult the
people who supplied the vowels and accents...

the nature of the chant and phonology, as described in the
masoretico-grammatical literature, is consistent with pitch accents. i am
currently boning up on intonational phonology, and the theory of pitch
accents at boundaries, as a way of explaining the facts set out in khan
1987. (in principle, my model should project the tune underlying the
chanting traditions, obtained by reduction a la jackendoff or weil.)

shalom,
V
