I'm not sure if I have the expertise to judge whether this etymology is
valid.
However, as I am from the Netherlands, a country where, as you may know, the
public consumption of cannabis sativa does not lead to sanctions, I am in a
position to state that there are various drugs, i.m.h.o. much more dangerous
to health and well-being, and much more addictive, than marijuana. Those are
a.o. alcohol, sleeping pills, and gambling, none of which face serious
limitations on the part of governments worldwide - with the exception of
dictatorships such as Egypt or Iran.

Biblically speaking, it is theoretically possible that cannabis sativa is
mentioned in the Hebrew Bible. Just as alcohol is mentioned in the Bible
(cf., Noah). We all know the hazards, and let us deal with them in a mature
way. Alcohol is a far more dangerous and addictive drug than cannabis, but
the latter drug is very bad for lungs and concentration, and may cause
severe depressions - just as alcohol causes amnesia, Korsakow's disease, and
liver disorders.

Well everyone...lol...what are your thoughts on this
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sula_Benet.

A student came in and gave me several links refering (reefer-ing?) to this
etymological work. The pages were filled with statements like "it doesn't
take much of a leap to understand that Kaneh Bos [sp] is cannabis."
