Hi Karl,

For the most balanced examonation of the grammar of the first verses of the Bible see the fifty pages by Waltke 1975 in _Bibliotheca Sacra_ 132.

There is plenty in the Bible that suggests a previous cosmos.

Shalom,
Bryan

Looking at the Hebrew, there is no "When" nor "began" in the first verse, along with an added "then" in the second verse indicate an ideational viewpoint it looks as if they were added to make the translation say the same things as did most ancient creation myths, that started out with a pre-existing earth that the gods then made order out of chaos. He left off the definite articles for both "heaven" and "earth".
