I thought I'd just chime in with a few personal comments on the question of doctorates and their value.

... I'm 39 and my wife and I felt that it was getting close to the "now or never" point for becoming a full-time student again, so I'm extremely pleased to have this opportunity, since I tremendously enjoy the academic life and learning to study the biblical text better is a dream come true.

Thank you, Rob. I'm glad you survived one year in the cold north of England (I am in the south, where it is still hot!) and I hope you get through the next winter!

But it is never really too late to do a PhD. See http://www.lst.ac.uk/news/index.php?story=14, also http://www.brunel.ac.uk/news/universitynews/2004/cdata/brunel+to+validate+oldest+phd+student+in+the+world/ - last year the institution where I studied theology (then London Bible College) awarded a PhD to a 93-year-old! But I guess it does become harder to motivate oneself as the years go by.
