If translated well the word will retain enough of its meaning to be
understood correctly in the context in which it is used. You almost always
gain and lose meaning in translation. Multiple translation will definitely
lead to more loss of original meaning and addition of meaning not in the
original. But this really has nothing to do with etymology as far as I can
see.

I have an eytmology opinion question for the list
members. When one language is transliterated into
another language, or through three or four languages,
does the final word still retain the meaning of the
original word?
