Shoshanna:

What was practiced and what was normative are not
necessarily the same thing.

We find in Acts 20:29-30 that the leaders were to watch out
for people, whom Paul called "wolves", who would bring into
the church false teachings and practices, as well even some
of the leaders of the churches would do the same. Though
magic was opposed by Paul and the Apostles, it was common
in the societies in which the early church found itself,
and it is only natural that that would be one of the
practices brought into the church by those "wolves". The
epistles of Paul often were to oppose those teachings, to
try to nip them off in the bud. The writings of John were
largely in response to those teachings as they had matured
and further corrupted the church.

The loss of knowledge of how to pronounce the name sounds
to me like an example of magic among Jews.

Karl W. Randolph.
