Hi Kevin,
This is very much a Second-Temple and later rabbinic reconstruction of the
events. They assumed that
1. There was only ONE (legitimate) high priest at any one time.
2. That ALL (legitimate) priests (Kohanim) must have been descended from
Aaron and his two surviving sons.
These assumptions are based, of course, on the Priestly source in the
Pentateuch. However the reality of the pre-exilic period, at least what we
can see in the Deuteronomistic History, is that there were many different
cultic centers and as many different priestly families. The book of Samuel
does not give any Aaronide pedigree for either Eli or Zadok - it is the
Chronicler who turns them into descendants of the two sons of Aaron, and
turns Samuel into a Levite. He does this not only in the genealogies. Look
at 2 Sam. 8:18 - "and the sons of David were priests", which 1 Chron. 18:17
turns into "and the sons of David were first by the king's hand".
Yigal
