Dear Fred:

Daniel 8:11 does not speak about DAILY SACRIFICES. It speaks about TAMID. The expression is (forgive my lack of familiarity with the tranliteration conventions of the forum): "VA MIMENU TAMID" which I would translate literally "AND FROM HIM WAS TAKEN AWAY/SEPARATED TAMID." A search on the word TAMID ( I use BibleWorks for my Hebrew OT and Greek NT research) shows that the word TAMID refers to ALL ASPECTS OF THE SANCTUARY SERVICE. Here is my selection of the most pertinent passage where TAMID is used in the OT:

******

THE TAMID

Search on the word TAMID indicated that the Hebrew term occurs in the Hebrew Old Testament (BHS 4th edition) in ONE FORM in 103 VERSES with a total of 104 HITS. Here are the texts:

Exod. 25:30; 27:20; 28:29f, 38; 29:38, 42; 30:8; Lev. 6:6, 13; 24:2ff, 8; Num. 4:7, 16; 9:16; 28:3, 6, 10, 15, 23f, 31; 29:6, 11, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, 31, 34, 38; Deut. 11:12; 2 Sam. 9:7, 10, 13; 1 Ki. 10:8; 2 Ki. 4:9; 25:29f; 1 Chr. 16:6, 11, 37, 40; 23:31; 2 Chr. 2:3; 9:7; 24:14; Ezr. 3:5; Neh. 10:34; Ps. 16:8; 25:15; 34:2; 35:27; 38:18; 40:12, 17; 50:8; 51:5; 69:24; 70:5; 71:3, 6, 14; 72:15; 73:23; 74:23; 105:4; 109:15, 19; 119:44, 109, 117; Prov. 5:19; 6:21; 15:15; 28:14; Isa. 21:8; 49:16; 51:13; 52:5; 58:11; 60:11; 62:6; 65:3; Jer. 6:7; 52:33f; Ezek. 38:8; 39:14; 46:14f; Dan. 8:11ff; 11:31; 12:11; Hos. 12:7; Obad. 1:16; Nah. 3:19; Hab. 1:17

As not all texts are related to the Sanctuary Service ( you can personally verify with a Hebrew concordance of the Old Testament), I selected from all these texts 43 that have direct bearing on the work in the Sanctuary. I am listing these texts below, indicating the Sanctuary service to which the TAMID refers in these texts. Let me begin with a BDB (Brown-Driver-Briggs Lexicon) definition of the term TAMID. I transliterated into English the Hebrew word because this e-mail will not be able to support the Hebrew characters, and abbreviated the definition for our purposes:

A summary of the Sanctuary work that is described under the term TAMID is as follows:

SHOWBREAD (Exodus 25:30), THE LAMP (Exodus 27:20), THE BREASTPLATE (Exodus 28:29), THE PLATE (Exodus 28:36), THE MORNING AND EVENING LAMB AND FLOUR OFFERING (Exodus 29:38), THE INCENSE (Exodus 30: ), THE ALTAR FIRE (Leviticus 6:12), THE FLOUR OFFERING (Leviticus 6:20), THE BURNING LAMP (EVENING-MORNING) (Leviticus 24:2), THE BREAD (Leviticus 24:5), THE BREAD (Numbers 4:7), THE DAILY (MORNING and EVENING) OFFERING) (Numbers 4:16) THE LAMBS (Numbers 28:3), THE LAMBS AND THE FLOUR (Numbers 28:3), THE SABBATH BURNT OFFERING (Numbers 28:10), THE TRUMPETS (1 Chronicles 16:6), THE CONTINUAL PRIESTLY MINISTRY (1 Chronicles 16:37), THE CONTINUAL PRIESTLY MINISTRY (1 Chronicles 23:30), THE CONTINUAL BREAD AND BURNT OFFERINGS (2 Chronicles 2:4), THE CONTINUAL BURNT OFFERINGS (Ezra 3:5 ), THE CONTINUAL BREAD AND OFFERINGS ( Nehemiah 10:33 ), THE CONTINUAL SACRIFICE OFFERING (Ezekiel 46:14 ), THE CONTINUAL SACRIFICE OFFERING (Ezekiel 46:15 ).

As can be seen from the above list of Old Testament texts, the term TAMID covers THE
ENTIRE SANCTUARY SERVICE which was CONTINUAL, UNINTERRUPTED, 24 HOURS A DAY, SEVEN DAYS A WEEK, 365 DAYS A YEAR. You have noticed also that some texts speak of the MORNING-EVENING SERVICE, while other texts speak of the EVENING-MORNING SERVICE. The LAMB AND FLOUR offerings were taking place FROM MORNING TO EVENING (Exodus 29:38; Numbers 4:16; 28:3), the INCENSE and the FIRE ON THE ALTAR were burning AROUND THE CLOCK (Exodus 30:7-8; Leviticus 6:12), The lamp was burning from EVENING TO MORNING (Exodus 27:20;), the BREAD was present ALL THE TIME (Leviticus 24:5; Numbers 4:7), the priests were called to minister before the ark CONTINUALLY (1 Chronicles 16:37; 23:30), the burnt offerings were BURNING AROUND THE CLOCK on the altar (Ezekiel 46:15).

The best way to describe THE SANCTUARY SERVICE is with the word TAMID (CONTINUAL), because the work at the sanctuary was taking place IN PERPETUITY, never INTERRUPTING, never CEASING.

Different passages in Daniel also speak of the REMOVAL of the TAMID: TAKEN AWAY (Daniel 8: 11), TAKEN AWAY (Daniel 8:12 ), TAKEN AWAY( Daniel 8:13 ) TAKEN AWAY (Daniel 11:31), TAKEN AWAY (Daniel 12:11), and about its RESTORATION: RESTORED (Daniel 8:14).

What could MEAN that the TAMID was TAKEN AWAY by the LITTLE HORN of Daniel 7: 8 and 8:9? Nothing less than the INTERRUPTION of the Sanctuary Service, the SHUTTING DOWN of the Sanctuary. According to the prophet Daniel’s vision in Chapter 8, the LITTLE HORN TOOK AWAY THE TAMID, that is, SHUT DOWN THE SANCTUARY.

The bewildered and shocked prophet was also told that that at the end of 2300 EVENINGS-MORNINGS the TAMID was going to be RESTORED, that is, the SANCTUARY SERVICE WAS GOING TO BE REINSTATED AND RESUMED. The CONTEXT of Daniel 8:9-14, makes it clear that the SUBJECT of the PASSAGE was not PROPHETIC TIME PERIODS, but the SANCTUARY SERVICE which had been SHUT DOWN, and was going to be restored at the end of 2300 SANCTUARY EVENING-MORNINGS, WHICH ARE LITERAL SANCTUARY DAYS.

******

An objection was made concerning the "bread of the presence" or the "swewbread." It is true that this bread was replaced EVERY WEEK, but the fact is that there was never a time in the sactuary service when this bread was not CONTINUALLY, that is ,TAMID, before the Lord.

As you noticed, most of the texts speak of the morning-evening, but there are also texts that speak of the evening-morning. These texts do not represent THE EXCEPTION, but they are part of the TAMID, the CONTINUOUS, UNITERRUPTED SERVICE in the Sanctuary. IN ALL, the service in the sanctuary went AROUND THE CLOCK, that is TAMID.

Daniel 8:11 speaks of the TAKING AWAY OF THE TAMID, while Daniel 8:14 speaks about the RESTAURATION OF THE TAMID. From the context, it is clear that what is restored after 2300 evening-mornings is the TAMID, the temple service which was shut down by the little horn. I therefore believe that in the discourse context of Daniel 8:9-14 TAMID and EREB-BOQUER talk about the same thing or are SYNONYMOUS.

Eduard,

It appears that each of the examples you gave below are using the order of
evening - morning to refer specifically to the night, which would make
sense, but doesn't seem to apply to what Rosangela was saying, which was
that evening - morning is not used to refer to the daily sacrifice. Do you
have any examples where evening - morning is used in reference to the daily
sacrifice?

Hello!

You state:

"It is interesting to note that, while in Genesis, referring to the days of
Creation, the order is evening - morning, the order of the words when
referring to sacrifices is morning - evening."

This is not always true concerning the temple service. Here are some texts:

NIV Exodus 27:21 In the Tent of Meeting, outside the curtain that is in
front of the Testimony, Aaron and his sons are to keep the lamps burning
before the LORD from evening till morning. This is to be a lasting ordinance
among the Israelites for the generations to come.

NIV Leviticus 24:3 Outside the curtain of the Testimony in the Tent of
Meeting, Aaron is to tend the lamps before the LORD from evening till
morning, continually. This is to be a lasting ordinance for the generations
to come.

NIV Numbers 9:15 On the day the tabernacle, the Tent of the Testimony, was
set up, the cloud covered it. From evening till morning the cloud above the
tabernacle looked like fire.

NIV Numbers 9:21 Sometimes the cloud stayed only from evening till morning,
and when it lifted in the morning, they set out. Whether by day or by night,
whenever the cloud lifted, they set out.

NIV Deuteronomy 16:4 Let no yeast be found in your possession in all your
land for seven days. Do not let any of the meat you sacrifice on the evening
of the first day remain until morning.

Also, note that the Septuagint and the Theodotion are SUPPLYING the word
"day," which cannot be found in the Hebrew original.

Regards,

Eduard

It is interesting to note that, while in Genesis, referring to the days of
Creation, the order is evening - morning, the order of the words when
referring to sacrifices is morning - evening. It might also be mentioned
that both Greek translations (the Septuagint and the Theodotion) included
"days" in their translation of Daniel 8:14.
