To get in on the discussion here (I sent replies earlier, but I believe
they were somehow lost in cyberspace), as has already been pointed out,
the verb is in a pausal situation: this accounts for the patach under
the het lengthening to a qames. Lee mentioned earlier that this was a
stative verb. At first I didn't think so, because in the 3ms the vowel
under the second radical is patach, but apparently, in other forms, such
as the 3fs and 3cp, as well as forms with pronominal suffixes, the verb
betrays itself and shows its true stative nature.
