Dear Michael Millier:

Thank you for this reference.

Throughout reading the article, I kept
thinking of the Katzenjammer (cat howl)
Kids cartoons of about a century ago:
the spellings were indicative of German
immigrants’ pronunciations. Similarly,
the ancient Near East was a rather
polyglot area, many trying with greater
or lesser success to speak, read and
write to each other in Greek. Some, like
Luke, did quite well, while others like
John did poorly. How many of the crossed
pairs of phonemes really represented
mispronunciations by people speaking
Greek as a second language?

Yes, this has some bearing on the
pronunciation of Biblical Hebrew, but
I’m not sure what yet.

Karl W. Randolph.
