Both you and Uri mentioned “proto-Semitic”.
Are there any extent documents written in
that language, even ones as short as the
Mesha stone? Or are we talking about a
reconstructed language, one based on
theory? What if the theory is wrong? What
if Biblical Hebrew, with 22 consonantal
phonemes, is the “proto-Semitic” (there are
some who make that claim)?

Dear Karl,

May I suggest you study the subject, and then argue about it.

Don't you think that the Theory of Evolution is a bit outside the scope of
this list?

Uri

In regards to queries on this list about Proto-Sinaitic inscriptions
(vis-a-vis Hebrew), the two following "scholarly works" by Albright and Sass
deal with the Proto-Sinaitic inscriptions in "some depth." Sass' work
questions some of the translations attempted by Albright. Sass also provides
a lengthy bibliography on the subject. By going to www.google.com and keying
in "Proto-Sinaitic inscriptions" additional urls with bibliographies are
available.

William Foxwell Albright. The Proto-Sinaitic Inscriptions And Their
Decipherment. Cambridge. Harvard Univerity Press. 1966

Benjamin Sass. The Genesis of the Alphabet and Its Development in the 2d
Millennium BC. 1988. Wiesbaden. Otto Harrassowitz.

At my website are a "few examples" of Proto-Sinaitic inscriptions. If
interested, cf. the following urls :

I also have an article on "the evolution of Hebrew," citing work by
Albright. cf. the following url if interested :
