IIRC, TDOT talks about this s.v. "Elohim." My
recollection is that they say that Elohim is a plural
of El (with a medial he vis-a-vis elim as an
Aramaicization, much like the form Abraham from
Abram). Eloah is then a back formation of a singular
from the the plural form Elohim. (But I wouldn't say
it is without basis in other Semitic languages; I
think their argument is that it is an Aramaism.)
