David,
Well, you can buy Accordance with a smaller or larger package of text
databases according to your needs, and one of their most recent additions to
the repertoire is the *non-biblical* (somewhat confusingly referred to as
"secular" or sometimes "sectarian" on the oaksoft.com webpage) DSS,
grammatically tagged by Martin Abegg.
I don't have it, mind you (we're a strictly PC university -- in the computer
sense, that is), I just worked with it for two afternoons in somebody elses
office when in Jerusalem in june, so my basis for evaluating it are a bit
slim, but it does seem a wonderful tool. I'd LIKE to have access to it :-)
Nope. it doesn't have the Biblical DSS.
For DSS on PC, there's the Brill CD-Rom "The DSS Electronic Reference
Library 2". Mind the "2" - volume 1 is an obscenely expensive 2 CD-ROM set
that has only photographs (including biblical texts), no transcribed texts
-- but for anyone needing the photos, vol. 1 is a wonderful thing to work
with. The more affordable vol 2 has photos too, but not the same quality.
What it does have is searchable transcribed text of NEARLY all non-Biblical
Hebrew and Aramaic DSS. The search function isn't perfectly user friendly -
you have to fiddle around with it a bit to realize how it interprets your
requests (like, what forms of a word are returned). And it lets you search
by word only, not by grammatical category like Accordance. But it's still
the most comprehensive and user friendly DSS concordance I know of; I use
mine practically every day.
hope it's warmer in California than here :-)
