According to Webster's Encyclopedic Unabridged, the English word goes back
to the 12th c, well before Shakespeare, and is indeed based on the Semitic
word for the tribe of Judah. Its current meanings, slurs aside, are 1)
those who trace their lineage to the Hebrews or to the post-exilic
adherents of Judaism, 2) those whose religion is Judaism, or 3) those who
trace their lineage to Judah.
