Well, the question is: what did the ancient writers do? Did they find the
truth in a real past or in a past narrated? Modern sentiments may be
different, and partly very naive about historicity. Shakespeare wrote about
a certain prince of Denmark: Is this true? It is related to a Danish saga
about Amled. Was he a historical person? Does it detract from the validity
of the Hamlet as a literary figure if Amled was not a historical person? As
somebody wrote in a review of a book about Icelandic sagas: Is this true--or
just something that happened?
