For the source of "Yad" as memorial:
The extended meaning of the word includes associated concepts such as-
"al-yad" nearby=touchable
"yad" handle [Mishna Uksin]=used to touch/grasp
and consequentaly anything making useful/possible to "grasp"-
here may be the source of "Yad" as a memorial- allowing ourselves to grasp
[come to grips] with the death of the individual, or as an intermediary to
touch his memory.
