A very sound way to get an impression of the problems involved is to consult
Eissfeldt's Hexateuch-Synopse from 1922. Here the four (five in his view)
documents are placed like in a NT synopsis. Sometimes it makes sense,
sometimes definitely not. But it is a nice overview of how the classical
German school discussed the matter.
