As the vocalisation of Egyptian is unknown, I suppose Ian is within
his rights to suggest a vocalisation of this name which nicely matches
the Masoretic form of Genesis. But he should admit that that is what
he is doing. Kitchen spells this name Shebitku and Rohl Shabataka.

Well, maybe the names are the same. What does that tell us? Maybe it
was a common Cushite name, as in many cultures children are commonly
named after the national patriarchs. (Do we have any evidence for or
against that?) We know of several Israelites called Joseph (or
Josephus) in the 1st century CE. Must we then identify the Joseph son
of Israel well known from Genesis with the historian or one of his
contemporaries? Of course not. But your argument comes down to the
same thing.

<snip>

How about the son of Cush called Sabteca, the name of that son of Kush, the
Kushite king, Shabtaka (697 - 690 BCE)? (But I guess if a simple term like
madai doesn't pass there's not much hope for this either.)

Cheers,

Ian
