Thank you for your full and clear, and quick, response.

I would agree that the literal translation of Rom 12:20 as well as Col
1:15 is potentially misleading, but may be the best option. But if the
metaphor in the text is misleading and the literal meaning is bland,
it is considered legitimate to substitute another metaphor (as close
as possible to the original one) to keep the flavour. In Romans 12:20
we could say "you will make him burn with shame". But that's not
brilliant either.

Footnotes may be fine, but the type of reader I have in mind will not
read any footnotes, and is actually less likely to read the text at
all if there are footnotes. So you would need to bear that in mind
when choosing the main text - a tricky one at John 1:1!

Greetings on this day of celebration of Jesus as "the firstborn from
the dead".
