Why not past perfect? in the preceding verse, 3.18 Naomi tells Ruth who
came home before dawn, ki lo yishkot ki `im kila hadavar hayom. don't
worry, he's not stalling, he'll finish by the time the day is done,
meanwhile Boaz had ALREADY gone up before the day began.
And it plays nicely off the intertextual allusion to Deut 25.7: vealta
yevamto hash`arah where the veqatal is a legalistic prescription, for the
quasi-levirate subtext here.
2) I didn't get the part about "using 4 and 1 as alliterative/assonance".
