Gen 1 points to a more general
understanding of the land (while that land may be concentrated in one
continent). The details of this were posted on another list and will probably
appear hear as well.
Beside this, note that the phrase
"fill(ed) the land" is used in generally accepted Priestly sections to
mean "land" not limited to Israel.
Gen. 6:11 Hamas filled the
land
Gen 9:1 Noah and sons are to
"fill the land" followed by the Nations list of Gen 10 with their
boundaries on many continents.
Even when the Israelites fill the
land, it is the land of Egypt (Ex. 1:6.)
For what may be an interesting
connection between the Land of Israel and the cosmic significance of G-d's
dwelling there (not Israel's dwelling) see Psalms 74:20 where we have the only
other Biblical verse including (parts of the) LAND being FILLED with HAMAS. Here
it is the land of Israel filled with chaotic forces that must be overcome (to
preserve the integrity of the creation??).
