[permaculture] Are you a peasant ?

Great question LL and probably very interesting to understand the true
meaning of the word and then its interpretation and general connotations
from all sectors of community. I have not been called a peasant which has
in the past been a derogatory term meaning someone close to a "low life"
one of no value living in poor conditions. I haven't been called one but
have been called many other derogatory terms.
However..time will evolve very quickly that it will be an honour to be
called a peasant and alter the meaning of the word. Or evolve a new word
for people striving to evolve sustainable existence for their families
neighbours and their communities.
Perhaps we may be better off recognising what peasantry is. What the word
meaning is and move beyond such classification. To suggest that members of
the Permaculture world should become peasants is perhaps a move in the
wrong direction, or simply incorrect. For the reality of the character and
essence of Permaculture people is those that actually evolved through smart
awareness and learned intelligence who continually strive to gain more
It is a pity to recognise the derogatory tones of this term peasant for as
we know the majority of rural communities and food production world wide is
through the the so called peasants. Perhaps the term has been abused also.
Perhaps we could do them a service by infiltrating Permaculture into their
worlds which could be a mutual learning and evolutionary advantage for both
a poor farmer of low social status who owns or rents a small piece of land
for cultivation (chiefly in historical use or with reference to subsistence
farming in poorer countries).
