I hope you can join us for an evening to learn about and celebrate the work
of CSI Volunteers at our 9th Annual Volunteer Symposium:

*When: Thursday, March 21st, 6:00 - 8:00 PM*

*Where: Borg-Warner Room, Tompkins County Public Library, 101 E. Green
Street, Ithaca*

*What: Water, Here and Now: Documenting Baseline Water Quality - The
Community Science Institute's 9th Annual Volunteer Symposium*

* *

More than 4 years have passed since the possibility of hydrofracking in New
York first made headlines. Unlike other states in the Marcellus region, New
Yorkers have had this time to consider how hydrofracking might affect local
communities and how to minimize negative impacts. Locally, the preservation
of clean water is of significant importance. The Community Science
Institute <http://www.communityscience.org>(CSI) runs a certified water
testing lab and partners with volunteer groups to monitor water quality.
CSI's "Red Flag" <http://www.communityscience.org/?page_id=1267>volunteer
monitoring program has collected scientifically credible baseline water
quality data for many streams and creeks in the Southern Tier.

This year's keynote speaker will be Abby Kinchy, former CSI volunteer and
principal investigator of the *Watershed Mapping
Project*<http://www.watershed-mapping.rpi.edu/>,
a research study that examines efforts to monitor the impacts of Marcellus
Shale natural gas development on surface water.

CSI volunteers from Tompkins and surrounding counties will share results
and experiences from their monitoring efforts. CSI staff will present a
sneak preview of the *Regional Baseline Initiative* database, a collection
of certified baseline tests from nearly 200 private groundwater wells
across New York.

Join us to find out what volunteers and scientists have been doing to
empower and inform communities about the risks to water from hydrofracking
and how you can get involved!
