I just wanted to add that I did not mean to fire in your direction for
doing updates at all, and I do remember your post about this issue
(well, I found it again after facing the issue).

I agree that we're not in good shape, but I also obviously don't find
much time for Source Mage myself. I do care, but am frightened of
investing any time as I am lost in several tasks already.

Perhaps one has to gather the group of people who actually do regular
work on Source Mage and decide if perhaps one has to adjust the project
goals to the manpower that is there. This could mean dropping the
illusion of supporting any kind of "normal" end user, focus on having
stuff available without perfect solutions (at least instructions how to
fix things that might get broken).

As in this case with util-linux, folks that don't manage to get around
dealing with this when you raise the issue will just have to live
through whatever happens to them. Like me. I combined this with rare
udates, even, as I actually try to minimize the time I spend fixing up
my system ... it's partially paradox, I know, but it is sad fact that
something _always_ breaks.

And perhaps we should just live with that. Source Mage still is great
for what it is. It doesn't get in the way, but is way more comfortable
than running Linux From Scratch. And honestly, that is the niche I see
for it: Have LFS-like control, but some proper package management. It's
not a polished distro by any means, though. We're not gentoo (does that
count as polished?;-). Heck, what does Lunar do these days?

Alrighty then,

Thomas
