I run kde(currently 3.5.1) on linux-2.6.12.5 on my Dell Inspiron 510m notebook
which has an Intel ICH4-M chipset and everything is fine, however i have a
problem with all more recent kernels, in that when kde starts, kmix displays
a splashscreen which won't go away. If I try to move the mixer control, is
just resets itself to zero.

Have you tried looking at the KDE logs and/or starting KDE from a
console and seeing if it gives you any errors?

I think that the old kernel was compiled with gcc-3.4.x, whereas the new one
used gcc-4.0.2

Have you tried compiling the new ones with gcc 3.4.x (or making sure
they already were)?

I did some googling, and found one or two similar problems, but no solutions
were mentioned.

Does anyone have any ideas about this?

My old Athlon 750 desktop works fine with all kernels.

My Inspiron 5100 works fine with all kernels (other than sws2 not
patching with 2.6.15.3 and such), but I'm using e17, not KDE. ;/
