Georg,
Check out some of the videos on YouTube with Alan 'Shroom' Kapuler. He is a
plant genius, perhaps the best there is. Permaculture Institute has one
posted on their FB page right now.

He explains that genetic modification/human manipulation isn't an idea to
throw away entirely. As you suggest, it is actually a common core of
species evolution sans human manipulation. Very common in the plant
kingdom, but also occurs inter-kingdom. The problem is human greed,
control, and misguidedness. As Shroom told my old boss, if I could
safely grow avocado on pine trees, I'd have a hard time being against that.

The ge issue to me is an ethical one. And with sound ethics could be a
useful tool in the kit. The principles of appropriate use of technology
would certainly require not starting with genetic engineering to achieve
ones goals however.
