These are indeed very beautiful places but I wonder how long they will last?
Here in the PRC, the most famous terraces at Longsheng are already falling
into disrepair.
Locals that once farmed the terraces are all now building guest houses and
guiding tour groups.  The local gov't is very concerned that the tourism that
the terraces attract. may actually be the death of this amazing topography.

I have seen this first hand in Wuyishan.  The terraces that were the route of
Robert Fortune when he first smuggled the secrets of tea out of China are a
shadow of their old selves.  Snarled up with sedges and rushes, all the young
people have already moved into the cities or joined the tourism trade,
leaving nobody around to maintain them.

Anyway, in some ways they are the opposite of permaculture.  Back breaking
annual work for a low priced commodity that is available almost everywhere.
Surely, they should all be replanted with fruit and nut forests, that will
last for the next hundred years?

Chris

The UNESCO World Heritage Organization recognized five places in the
Philippines where the rice terraces are of historical and cultural
importance. Since I've already been to Batad and Hapao (See my earlier
photos), it made sense that this time I should visit Kiangan, Bangaan,
and Mayoyao. All are within a hundred kilometers of each other in the
province of Ifugao, about 8 hours by bus north of Manila. What's with
these five places? That's what I wanted to find out, follow me as I
spend 4 days photographing them all. Enjoy. UNESCO World Heritage

Dear Permies:

A recent article that I wrote.

Brent McMillan, The Steward of Woodhaven
Avilla, IN USA

Practicing Aikido in a Suicide Economy

A lot of authors, websites, etc. talk about preparing for what's coming,
hell, I'm already there. Where are the articles and websites for us? I no
longer have health insurance. I haven't had regular work for almost nine
months. I pick up a little work here and there. The dystopian future is
already here for me...
