Ben, please show me where I argue against this course of action.  This was
not the point.  My point was that the healing is underway.  I suppose we
could beat the general populace about the head for being myopic, but that
generally has a way of making it worse in my experience.  Or we could accept
that this thing is going to flow the way it flows, and keep on doing that
good work.

We've already experienced catastrophic species loss, and no one is more
deeply saddened by that than I am.  But wagging your finger won't bring them
back I'm afraid.  "Some...hypothetical...distant geological future" is the
one that is already filling back in with pioneer species.  The extra carbon,
while an unfortunate product of an economy that we could probably all do
without, is being sequestered already.  Do you think there is anything on
this planet that will change human activity at critical mass besides market
forces?  No.  As much as we'd like to think otherwise.

But those market forces have passed their peak already.  Human activity is
already changing.  Destruction is in decline.  On the whole things should be
improving as we speak.  That is, globally there should be a net gain of plant
biomass underway.  Whether we're talking about Detroit filling in with weeds
and farms; Riverside, California turning into a nitrogen-fixing forest; or a
40% cancellation of bulk dry goods due to global construction project
cancellations reported in the latest Baltic Dry Index statistics.  I haunt
these news outlets because what's bad for the economy is good for humans,
whether they understand that yet or not.  And the news is encouraging.

So please keep catching carbon, and I'll obviously do likewise, but if you
want to get steamed up about global trends, don't get too upset if I decline
to party.

Regards,
Tripp

While it's certainly possible that this conjecture is correct, there's
precious little data to support it. Meanwhile, ocean acidification (directly
linked to rising CO2) will probably render most species of coral extinct
within a couple of decades, unless our culture makes some drastic changes.
Sea levels are going to rise, and whole biomes are going to shift toward the
poles with countless species unable to make the transition. So weighing the
near-certainty of imminent catastrophic species loss (beyond the already
massive toll from the clearing of habitat and overharvesting) against a very
hypothetical global gain in some distant geological future, I'm going to
choose to try to remove carbon from the atmosphere.
