(It sure insults people in the US, though! ) Back in the Nixon era, as a clever, angry college boy, I used the "Amerika" spelling, too. The Left originally inserted the Germanic "k" to link the US gov't to the Nazis. But:

I've always wondered what the "k" implied and finally decided it was a
takeoff on
a Russian spelling where lots of k's are used and that it was supposed to
mean leftist or
socialist, perhaps short for Amerikanski or whatever. Never thought of the
Nazi connection
though they were national socialists (about as much that as Stalinist Russia
was a democratic republic
or a divine monarchy).
