I'd reckon that you might be very effective if you converted to Islam,
learned a tribal language, and spent the rest of your life over there. What
would be the odds of getting shot as CIA tho?.
I like uncle Bill's rules on foreign aid Pc, which include:
-go to learn, not teach
-live as the locals do, 100% (ie, no fancy mountain bike, even)
-if you leave, always go back.

Just heard an interview on NPR of a film maker who has spent many years in Afghanistan, including post 911. As he put it, once you have smoke a huge pipe of hashish with the Taliban to the point of helplessness they trust you. He's also a practicing Muslim and speaks the local dialect. He did indeed get picked up by the CIA. I would say if we want to get PC on the ground working with existing NGO's on the ground there or Afghan expatriates who are heading back in droves.
