I think it's a little late (or very early) in the year for OA. That needs to be applied when there is no brood in the hives. I know all of mine are building up fast right now.

Some people recommend multiple treatments over a period a several weeks when brood is present, but testing has shown that method to be less than reliable with little or no reduction in mite levels. Only the phoretic mites are killed by OA and the treatment is only effective for the few minutes that the vapors or liquid remains in the hive. This would leave quite a few days in between treatments for female mites to leave one brood cell and enter another.

If you're just looking for recommendations for next winter, price might be a big factor. Equipment for the drizzle method is fairly inexpensive and for just a few hives I would go that route. Vaporizers cost quite a bit more but would save a lot of labor if you're treating large numbers of hives.

If you decide on the drizzle you may want to practice with plain water and a hive body with empty frames so that you can get an even application of the Oxalic Acid when you treat.

Hey Rob,

Glad to see you still have a hive going. Hopefuly you are now an expert at
doling out the syrup in the fall.

The ocassional dead pupa is nothing to be worried about. If the front
porch is piled high, then we have a problem. In between, we get curious.

I always get a charge out of watching for pollen colors. And when you get
a frame with a lot of different colors stored across the comb, it can bee
pure art.

Cheers, Brad Kosiba

Do ya want to add your name to this year's OCBA Swarm Patrol?

Of course you do, free bees!

How it works:

When the OCBA receives word of a swarm, I will contact the folks who are within their desired radius of the swarm. I'll pass on the location to the 1st responder; remember there's usually no telling how long the swarm has been in a particular location or how long they'll be there. Therefore, rapid response (having your swarm gear at the ready [even with you]) is key to finding the swarm where it was last noticed. Bear in mind, some swarms are a lot easier to hive than others. (Some are a foot off the ground, others are higher....Are you comfortable on a ladder?) (One of the trickiest I've encountered, was in a mailbox!)

As the season progresses, I'll try to see that everyone on the list gets a shot at hiving a swarm.

Here's what I need from folks interested in swarms:
1) Make sure you've paid your 2015 OCBA membership dues ($5). [You're encouraged to join the NCSBA ($15). That's a cool twenty dollar bill for a colony of honeybees; a bargain.]
2) email me, include: your name
- phone #
- Area/distance your willing to travel to get a swarm
- Maximum height your comfortable dealing with a swarm
- Days &/or times of day you can realistically breakaway to catch a swarm

Spring is coming,
- Chris Richmond

If anyone is interested in this outreach opportunity, please contact me. In
the past if individuals have independently made contact with the
organization it has led to a bit of confusion. As outreach director for
OCBA I would love to coordinate this program.

Hi all, I got a request from folks at the Goddard School in Chapel Hill for
a bee keeper to come visit their young children. They are doing a farmer
visit series Feb 20-24...anyone available to to take this on? We are
visiting as part of our farm, but will not talk about bees....4 and 5 year
old children are the audience, and their caretakers/teachers...bout 15 kids
I'd think.

Contact is Ms. Pearl:

Just passing along more proof of the effectiveness of this ultra cheap SHB treatment.

Only needing 1/2 a sheet in each hive its a whopping .17 cents per hive to "treat"!

Now you just gotta figure out if your girls push them up or down. Im going to try a flat board on a stick to test the bottom board.

I stopped counting at 120 on my friends sheet. They are, like the SHB, hooked on it now!
