I just want to reinforce David's comment.

Please, as Don Hopkins again advised us at the recent state meeting, please call the bee inspectors right away as a first reaction to this kind of event, even before you even think to post to this group.  Only a fresh sample of dead or dying bees can give a real answer.

We will all benefit way more from gathering some real answers from the lab (paid for by our taxes) than listserv guesses, however expert.  Our NC Bee Inspectors work closely with their labs and the pesticide regulators to track down the answers. - Much better than just staring at the bees and twitching yourself in fear and frustration.

Cheers, Brad Kosiba

I had a nearly identical experience, on top of it when I opened the hive they had been robbed to the point that there wasn't a cell of honey inside.

There were piles of dead bees just outside the entrance and on the bottom board.  The queen and a few thousand bees are still alive, so I moved them to a nuc to try to save the colony.

The few experienced people I have shown the pictures to believe it's a result of pesticide and the remaining bees were likely brood or nurse bees at the time of the exposure.

The hive 5 feet away is fine, so it must have been during their foraging.
